When holidaying in Scotland, you have a variety of accommodation options to choose from, even when you’re on a budget. For the best selection of cheap hotels and other accommodation options, including their prices, location and transport links, take a look online. In the meantime, here is our brief guide to what’s on offer.
Hostels
Scotland has a large network of hostels, including those run by the Scottish Youth Hostel Association (SYHA). SYHA hostels used to be quite strict in terms of their house rules - banning alcohol for example. But their attitudes have relaxed since a network of independent hostels have sprung up in competition with them. You’ll find excellent, and well-maintained hostels in very central locations in the main cities, as well as a surprising number of hostels and bothies in rural areas, including the Highlands, Lowlands, Borders and Deeside.
Camping
Another budget option when touring Scotland is to stay at one of the country’s many camp sites. You won’t need to book in advance unless it is peak season. A general rule of thumb is, the more remote the camp site, the better the scenery and the lower the cost. Some camp sites will provide better amenities than others, so it’s best to check in advance so that you know what to pack.
The Scottish weather can make camping a less appealing prospect than in other warmer countries - so pack waterproofs! You can also camp rough in some rural areas, but observe the country code, and never pitch your tent next to a stream or river which could easily flood due to overnight rain.
Bed and Breakfasts
A cosier and cheaper alternative to hotels, B&B accommodation is plentiful in Scotland, even in remote areas. To find B&B accommodation, look online for specialist websites and check with the local tourist information centres and the Scottish Guest House and B&B Association. Prices are around £25 per person per night, including a big Scottish breakfast.
Location
When looking to save a bit of money on accommodation, consider staying just outside of the main city centres, as rates will be much cheaper. Places like Falkirk or Polmont are only a ½ hour train ride away from Glasgow or Edinburgh, with trains running regularly throughout the day. Ensure you take out travel cover for your trip – try Go Travel Insurance for some decent quotes on holiday insurance.
